Undergraduate Research

One of the endless benefits of attending a world-class university is having access to its world-class faculty. UC Berkeley's faculty is on the cutting edge of research in nearly every field imaginable, and undergraduates have the opportunity to contribute to their progress. There is a great demand for student helpers in dozens of active research projects on campus. Students interested in participating in a faculty research project can do so through the Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program.

How can I participate in a faculty research project?

• The Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (URAP) matches undergraduates with a variety of faculty research projects on campus.
• Although there are rare exceptions, undergraduates generally do not participate in this program until their sophomore year at the earliest.
• Freshmen who are considering applying to URAP are encouraged to spend their first year familiarizing themselves with the campus, as well as with the specific projects available to undergraduates.
• URAP requires all participating students to have a minimum 2.0 GPA.
• Each individual project may have its own set of requirements. Consult URAP for information on your area of interest.
• At the end of every semester, URAP publishes a booklet of projects that are seeking apprentices. For further information, log on to the URAP website, or visit the URAP office at 347 Campbell Hall.

How can I receive money to conduct my own research project?

• Undergraduate Research @ Berkeley provides information on applying for a number of undergraduate research programs in preparation for graduate school.
• While many of these awards are for summer research before your senior year of school, some are for the academic year, and it is never too early to start thinking about what research you would like to conduct.
• Award amounts range from $2,500 to as much as $5,000 and can be used for research in the United States or internationally.
• The Haas Scholars Program is not associated with the Business School, but is for Berkeley undergraduates in any major, so don't be fooled by the name.
• Each program has its own grade point average requirement and other criteria.
