Normal Progress

How many classes and units should I take each semester?

  • Normally you will take between 13 and 16 units each semester. A common program would include four courses worth 3 or 4 units each.

  • As a transfer student, averaging 15 units per semester (30 per year) will allow you to complete the 120 units required for graduation within two years.

  • All students are expected to take a minimum of 13 units each semester. Exceptions to the minimum are considered in certain cases and must be granted by the dean of the College.

  • The maximum unit limit per semester is 20.5. Undeclared students seek execptions from a college adviser and declared major students seek them from their major adviser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q - I receive financial aid. Can I take fewer than 13 units?

A - Before you reduce your course schedule below 13 units, always visit a Financial Aid counselor and be sure that you understand any effects that a reduced schedule may have on your current or future aid.
