Quantitative Reasoning (QR)

How soon should I complete Quantitative Reasoning (QR) requirement?

  • If required, you should plan to try to complete QR as soon as possible.

  • Students who are not pursuing studies that require an in-depth quantitative preparation have the option to postpone completion of the requirement. However, a student attempting to incorporate the QR requirement into his/her busy Junior or Senior year curriculum sometimes finds this frustrating and problematic. Generally, delay is not a good idea.

  • Often students entering the university have already completed the requirement with test scores or with Advanced Placement credit, or through course work taken at a community college (www.assist.org).

  • Whatever course is taken to complete QR must be taken for a letter grade and requires a grade of C- or better to satisfy the requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q - Which courses do students normally take to fulfill the QR requirement?

A - Math 32, Statistics 2, or Computer Science 3 are popular courses that students take to complete QR.

Q - I don't need to take any Math, Statistics, or Computer Science courses for my major and Math is not a strength of mine, which course should I take?

A - Advisers often recommend Statistics 2 for students who are not interested in taking more than one quantitative course.

Q - If I take the QR requirement at a community college or some other non-UC school, does it still have to be letter-graded?

A - Yes, though the grade does not appear on your UC transcript, the College requires a C- or better in any course taken to complete the requirement.
