Unit Requirements

How many units do I need to take to graduate?

  • Taking a full-time 13-16 unit course load each term, or averaging 30 units per academic year, will keep you on track to graduate with 120 units in four years if you were admitted as a freshman or within two years if you transferred in as a junior.

  • As an undergraduate student, you may continue to enroll until you exceed 130 units. This means that the semester in which you exceed 130 total units must be your final semester.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q - I am graduating this semester. Can I take less than 13 units?

A - Yes, the College grants all graduating seniors a reduced schedule if they wish. Seniors availing themselves of this option must be sure that whatever they do take will in fact complete their studies. It is a good idea to get an updated degree audit (DAR) before requesting a reduced schedule from the receptionist at the Office of Undergraduate Advising in 113 Campbell Hall. If you receive financial aid, you should also contact the Financial Aid office and discuss the effect of a reduced schedule on your aid.

Q - I need permission to begin my last semester with more than 130 units. What should I do?

A - First, contact the College and see an adviser to be sure that you have a unit problem. Then, see a College Assistant Dean, with a carefully planned program endorsed by your major adviser, and discuss your options for continued enrollment and graduation.

Q - Will I be allowed more units or semesters if I declare a double major?

A - Yes. Students double majoring can continue to enroll until they exceed 136 total units. Alternatively, you can complete as many units as necessary so long as you complete your double major program within nine semesters if you were admitted as a freshman or five semesters if you were admitted as a junior.

Q - How many elective units do I need?

A - There is no set answer. It will depend on how many units you use to satisfy the College, major and University requirements, and will vary depending on individual need and choice.
