L&S College Requirements

How can I be sure that I have completed, or will complete, the L&S requirements?

  • As a senior, you should check on your progress toward completion of the L&S requirements at the beginning of your final year or soon thereafter.

  • Contact the L&S Office of Undergraduate Advising about a degree audit today.

  • Check these requirements
    1. Reading and Composition
    2. Foreign Language
    3. Quantitative Reasoning
    4. Seven Breadth Courses
    5. Unit Requirements
      • 120 total units
      • 60 L&S units
      • 36 upper division units
      • 6 upper division units outside your major
      • 18 upper division units in residence at Cal
    6. Senior Residence
      • 2 semesters and 24 units in the college taken at Cal after reaching your 90th unit; or
      • Participants in the UC Education Abroad Program (EAP) or UC Berkeley - Washington Program (UCDC) may meet a Modified Senior Residence Requirement by completing 24 (excluding EAP) of their final 60 semester units in residence. At least 12 of these 24 units must be completed after you have completed 90 units.
    7. P/NP: No more than 1/3 of your Berkeley units can be Passed/Not Passed

Frequently Asked Questions

Q - Can I graduate without completing all of the L&S requirements?

A - No, not until you have completed all of the L&S requirements. Everything - the general, college, and major requirements - must be completed before you can graduate.
