Complete Major

I want to complete my major. What should I do?

  • You should have declared your major. If you have not declared, then you must immediately go to your intended major department and speak with a major adviser about declaring.

  • You should visit your major adviser at the beginning of your senior year and design a plan to complete the major.

  • If you are planning a double major, you should try to declare the double major at the beginning of your senior year in order to allow adequate time for your application to be processed, in case any course adjustments are necessary in order to gain approval.

  • If you are planning simultaneous degrees (majors in two colleges), and your first college is not L&S, then you must submit your application at least two semesters and 24 units prior to your intended graduation date in order to account for completion of the senior residence requirement.

  • If you are interested in changing your major, visit the new major department and an L&S Adviser immediately to determine the feasibility of achieving what may be a difficult new goal.

  • Always take major prerequisites and upper division courses for a letter grade unless the major department tells you otherwise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q - What will happen if I don't declare my major?

A - Your future registration will be blocked and your eventual graduation may be delayed.

Q - When is the latest time that I can declare a double major?

A - You may declare a double major during your final semester. However, it is not a good idea to wait this long. If adjustments are required, waiting until a late date to submit your application may not allow you sufficient time to adjust your program and complete the double major.

Q - Can I graduate with an incomplete grade in a course required to complete my major?

A - No, all of the courses required for your major must be completed prior to graduation. You will have to delay your graduation until you have completed the incomplete required course.

Q - Can I graduate with an incomplete in a course in my major department but which is not needed to complete my major?

A - Yes, however, if the incomplete course is an honors course, then you may want to delay your graduation until the course is finished so that you can receive honors in your major. If you graduate with an honors course incomplete and finish it later, then you do not qualify for the honors on your diploma.
