Unit Requirements

How many units do I need to take to graduate "on time"?

  • Taking a full-time 13-16 unit course load each term, or averaging 30 units per academic year, will keep you on track to graduate in roughly four years.

  • As a freshman, there is no great need for you to be concerned with the overall unit requirements, but you should be aware of what they are.

  • Each and every course you take as a freshman does not need to be something that satisfies a specific requirement. There is room in the unit requirements for elective courses that you choose to take for your own reasons (to help decide on a major, or to learn about a specific topic that interests you, or just because you've heard a course is fun). Every course you pass will help you reach the minimum of 120 units needed for graduation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q - Can I take fewer than 13 units in a given semester?

A - Yes, the College of Letters and Science accepts various reasons for approving reduced course schedules. You will need to contact the College and discuss your situation with an adviser. If you receive financial aid, then you should also contact the Financial Aid Office and discuss the effect of a reduced schedule on your aid.

Q - How many elective units do I need?

A - There is no set answer. It will depend on how many units you use to satisfy the College, major and University requirements. That will vary depending on individual need and choice.

Q - Is there a limit on the total units that I may take?

A - Yes. Per semester, the limit is 20.5 units. (If undeclared, see a College Adviser to request permission to take more. If declared, see your major adviser.) Overall, if you stay in college more than eight semesters, the semester in which you exceed 130 units must be your last.
