Advanced Placement & High School Enrichment

What is High School Enrichment credit? How do Advanced Placement units fit into my requirements?

  • High School Enrichment (HSE) credit is any coursework you took at the college level before you graduated from high school that has been accepted as transfer credit by the Admissions Office.

  • HSE and AP credit are a win-win-win situation for students, because:

    1. These units count toward the required minimum of 120 total units, in effect giving you a head start in completing your degree.
    2. The course credits earned can be counted toward certain college requirements and major prerequisites.
    3. While these units count toward graduation, they are not counted toward the maximum limit of 130 total college units (after which you would normally not be allowed to enroll at Berkeley). They will appear on your Berkeley transcript, but L&S will discount them, internally, to allow your continued enrollment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q - Can my AP credits satisfy any of the seven breadth areas?

A - No. Only college courses may be used for the seven breadth requirements.

Q - What about HSE courses?

A - Definitely, just like any other college courses. If you took them at a California community college, check the Assist website (www.assist.org) to find out which breadth area they satisfied; otherwise, check with a College Evaluator.

Q - How do I find out if my AP or HSE credits apply toward my intended major?

A - Consult with the major department office to determine their policy.
