Courses that can be taken to satisfy the American Institutions requirement include Poli Sci 1 and 108A. For more information, students can visit the AH&I Office in 120 Wheeler or call (510) 642-5006.

  • These courses may be taken for a letter grade (C- or better) or on a Passed/Not Passed basis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q - How do I know if I have satisfied this requirement or not?

A - You can easily check Info-BEARS by calling 510-642-9400 and selecting "Profile Information" from the "Personal Information Menu." Also, once you have completed your first term the University requirements of Entry Level Writing, American History, and American Institutions, will show on the top of your transcript (student record) as either "requirement satisfied" or "required."

Q - I did not complete this requirement in high school or with testing, but I would like to take at least the American History portion of the requirement at a community college. Is this allowed? And if so, what course should I take?

A - Yes, this is allowed. You'll need to contact the American History and Institutions office in 120 Wheeler Hall or at 510-642-5006 to find out which courses are appropriate.
