Development Studies

Generally, "development studies" means the systematic study of problems, processes and prospects of the developing areas of the world. Development Studies at Berkeley focuses on the global aspect of current development problems and seeks to root student knowledge in the profoundly local and regional character of development trajectories and practice.

Lower Division Requirements and Prerequisites* for the Development Studies Major

*(prerequisites are lower division requirements that must be completed before declaring the major)

  • Anthropology 3
  • Development Studies 10* (minimum grade of C required)
  • Economics 1* or 2* (minimum grade of C required)
  • International and Area Studies 45
  • Statistics 2, 20, or 21
  • Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to four college-level semesters in one modern foreign language

Recommended: Environmental Design 4, Environmental Science, Policy, and Management 10, Geography 4, 20, Math 16A
