Apart from the basic need to take the correct courses to complete all your remaining requirements, there is one other absolutely necessary step you must take: declaring your candidacy for graduation, commonly called "placing yourself on the degree list."
- The easiest way to do this is via Tele-BEARS when you are registering for your last term. (We always hear from a small number of students that they attempted to add themselves to the degree list via Tele-BEARS but for some reason it did not "take." At the beginning of your last term, you should use Bear Facts to confirm that you are indeed on the degree list - just as you are expected to use it each term to make sure that you are actually enrolled in the courses for which you attempted to register.)
- If you do not add yourself via Tele-BEARS, you may do so by filing a petition during the first five weeks of your last term; you can do this at the Registrar's Office, but we recommend that you do it at the Office of Undergraduate Advising so that we can officially check your College requirements at the same time.
- If you fail to officially place yourself on the degree list before or during your last term, you will not graduate in that term, whether you've completed all requirements or not. Your graduation date will be the end of the term in which you place yourself on the degree list.
- Conversely, if you want to delay your graduation in order to take additional classes, the University does not force you to graduate when you have completed all requirements. If you are already on the degree list and later decide that you want to continue, file a petition to be dropped from the degree list with the Office of Undergraduate Advising. You can continue to enroll so long as you do not exceed the unit limitations. (Just be sure to remember to place yourself on the degree list when you do want to finish!)
