Guidelines for Applying for Readmission After Dismissal
Dismissed students wishing to request readmission to the College of Letters and Science should adhere to the following guidelines when preparing to appeal for reconsideration. Please be aware that even if you meet these criteria, there is no guarantee that your request for readmission will be approved. A comprehensive review of your situation will be made to determine whether you are prepared to return to campus.
- While away from UC Berkeley, you must successfully complete 24 transferable semester units (36 quarter units), in two regular semesters (or three quarters); using a summer session as one of these semesters must be approved in advance by an assistant dean. You must take a full course load each term unless you have received prior approval from the College to take a reduced load; a heavy course load coupled with a reduced course load does not furnish evidence that you can successfully complete mandatory full course loads at UC Berkeley.
- It is assumed that students will attend a California community college, or in some cases, UC Berkeley Extension. Except under special conditions, students in dismissed status are generally not admissible to other four-year colleges. There are no restrictions on admission at California community colleges for students in dismissed status.
- We recommend that you consult with a College adviser about the courses you take while not enrolled at UC Berkeley. An appointment with a College adviser may be scheduled by calling (510) 642-1483.
- Your program should consist of solid academic courses. You should complete the College's Reading and Composition requirement (see Entry Level Writing on the back of this form) and lower division prerequisites for your intended major. Next in priority are the quantitative reasoning, foreign language, and your remaining breadth requirements. Speak with a College adviser before repeating any course taken at Berkeley in which grades of D or F were earned.
- You must earn grades of B or better in these courses (B- grades are not sufficient) as evidence that you are ready to succeed at UC Berkeley and have resolved the problems that led to your dismissal. Any grade lower than a B will negatively affect the dean's decision on your request for readmission after dismissal.
- Before appealing for readmission, you should also clear all registration blocks and resolve any remaining issues (personal, financial, etc.) that led to your dismissal from the College. You will not be readmitted if there are current registration blocks on your record.
After Meeting the Above Criteria
- You must submit your appeal letter and a "Readmission Application" by the relevant deadline (June 1 for fall semesters, November 1 for spring semesters). Please note that these are firm deadlines. Complete the Statement of Legal Residence (SLR). Instructions are found at http://registrar.berkeley.edu/DisplayMedia.aspx?ID=LegalResInfo.pdf. Print and attach the completed form to your readmission application.
- In order to proceed with your appeal to return to the University, you must make an appointment for a personal interview with a dean. To meet the November 1 deadline, it is recommended that you meet with a dean prior to October 1st. To meet the June 1 deadline, it is recommended that you meet with a dean prior to May 1st. Appointments may be scheduled by calling (510) 642-1483 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Wednesdays.
The appointment should be scheduled for a date by which you will be able to furnish the dean with in-progress grades from the school you are attending (postcard grades or memos on letterhead from your instructors are acceptable), as well as your plans for any coursework you will take before your intended return to UC Berkeley. An official transcript must be submitted, when it is available, to verify the grades. - The decision to approve readmission after dismissal is not made by an individual dean. After your personal interview with a dean you must submit a written appeal to Deans' Conference (a committee of all the deans that decides on requests for readmission after dismissal). Please see the handout entitled "APPEALS TO DEANS' CONFERENCE" for more information.

Entry Level Writing
Students admitted fall 1986 or thereafter who have not satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement prior to their enrollment on the Berkeley campus must satisfy it by successfully completing appropriate coursework (or an exam) undertaken only on a UC campus. Credit for the Reading and Composition requirement cannot be granted without prior completion of Entry Level Writing.
