This section is intended to alert those of you who are potential transfer students to the College of Letters & Science that careful preparation for an academic major is crucial. The College of Letters & Science at the University of California, Berkeley has five academic fields of study:
Within these fields, there are more than sixty majors from which to choose!
Careful academic planning is a very important aspect of your admission preparation. Completing course prerequisites for an academic major is also a crucial component of your preparation.
Based on the availability of the courses at your college or university, you are strongly encouraged to complete as many major prerequisites as possible prior to transfer. The better prepared you are for your major when you get to Berkeley, the more opportunities you will have here.
If you are a California Community College student, the UC Berkeley major prerequisites can be found on Assist (http://www.assist.org). If you are transferring from another institution, it is recommended that you contact the intended major department for advice on preparation for the major.
For the majority of the majors, minimum preparation is the completion of some or all of the prerequisite courses.
However, there are currently several capped major programs that utilize special admission requirements in order to accommodate the excess demand. If you plan to apply for a capped major, then you must prepare thoroughly for it and also plan for an alternative major option in case you do not gain admission to your first choice.
The information obtained here does not cover all of the issues that will pertain to your transfer admission to UC Berkeley. Further information about transferring to Berkeley is also available from UCOP: Answers for Transfers and from the CAL Re-Entry Program.
