How do I get a copy of my transcript?
If you need an official copy of your transcript, you can order one in room 120 Sproul Hall. There is a fee for an official copy of your transcript and it takes approximately 2 weeks to be mailed. A 24-hour service is available for an additional fee. You can print an unofficial copy of your record through Bear Facts or call Info-BEARS (642-9400) to hear your final grades for the previous term, including total units completed.
How do I calculate my grade-point average?
You divide the total number of grade points earned by the total number of letter-graded units undertaken. For each unit of credit the following grade points are earned: A = 4, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3, B- = 2.7, C+= 2.3, C = 2, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1, D- = .7, F = 0. To count the grade points on your record, multiply the grade points for each grade received by the number of units in the course (consult the College Announcement concerning repeated courses and Incomplete grades).Grades of Passed (P), Not Passed (NP), Incomplete (I) or In-progress (IP) are not included in computing the GPA.
Example:
Course = 5 units
Grade = B (3.0 grade points per unit)
5 X 3 = 15 grade points earnedCourse Units Grade Grade Points Chem 1A 4 B- 10.80 Rhet 10 4 C+ 9.20 French 1 5
P 00.00
8 20.00 20 divided by 8 = 2.5 GPA
You may repeat a course in which you received a grade of F, D-, D, D+ or NP. The first 12 units of repeated letter-graded (F - D+) course work will be counted into your GPA replacing the first grade you received in the course. The first grade will remain on your transcript but the second grade will be reflected in your GPA. After 12 units of letter-graded course work have been repeated, for any subsequent repeats the second grade will be averaged with the first grade in your GPA.If you repeat a course in which you have received a grade of C- or higher, the course will appear on your transcript twice but no unit credit will be granted for the repeat and the second grade will not be reflected in your GPA.
What is an Incomplete grade?
The decision about what grade to award a student is solely the responsibility of the professor. If you are unable to complete a course, you should explain your situation to the professor as soon as possible. A professor may choose to grade your work in a course as Incomplete (I) if your work is of "passing" quality and you cannot complete the course due to circumstances beyond your control (you may be asked to supply documentation of your problem). An I grade should not be used to avoid a failing grade. If you receive an I grade, you must complete the remaining course work and file a "Petition To Remove An Incomplete Grade" in 128 Sproul Hall by the appropriate deadline (Fall semester I grade - first day of classes of the following Fall semester, Spring semester and Summer Session I grades- first day of classes of the following Spring semester). There is a $5 filing fee.
You may not enroll in the course again to complete an I grade; if you enroll in the course again, the original I grade will automatically lapse to an F or NP. You should arrange with the professor to complete the remaining course work well in advance of the deadline. If the professor is unavailable, the Chairperson of the department must make arrangements for you to complete the course.
You may choose to retain (freeze) an I grade permanently on your record. If you freeze an I grade, you may not enroll in the course again at UCB. You cannot unfreeze an I grade. You can freeze a maximum of two I grades (whatever the unit value of the course). To freeze an I grade you must submit a "Petition to Retain an Incomplete Grade Permanently on the Record" to the College's Office of Undergraduate Advising in room 113 Campbell Hall (by the same deadlines mentioned above).
If you do not complete or freeze an I grade by the appropriate deadline, the I grade will lapse to an F or NP on your record. You could then repeat the course.
For more information a FAQ on Incomplete grade is available at 113 Campbell Hall.
Does a Passed/Not Passed grade affect my grade-point average?
A course in which a grade of Passed (P) or Not Passed (NP) is received is not counted into your GPA (similarly, graduate courses graded on a Satisfactory [S] or Unsatisfactory [U] basis).A course in which a grade of P or S is received is counted toward degree requirements. A course in which a grade of NP or U is received does not count toward degree requirements.
Which courses may I take on a Passed/Not Passed grading basis?
Courses used to satisfy certain requirements cannot be taken on a Passed/Not Passed grading basis. Specifically, courses used to satisfy the Entry Level Writing, Reading and Composition, and Quantitative Reasoning requirements cannot be graded on a Passed/Not Passed basis. The second-semester course used in satisfaction of the Foreign Language requirement cannot be graded on a Passed/Not Passed basis (e.g., French 1 could be taken P/NP but French 2 would have to be taken for a letter grade).Generally, lower division prerequisites for your major and upper division courses for the major can not be taken on a P/NP basis. Check with your department concerning requirements for the major.
Courses used to satisfy the 6 and 7 course breadth requirements and the American Cultures requirement may be taken on a Passed/Not Passed grading basis.
