When you are not enrolled in a regular semester at Berkeley, you can earn unit and requirement credit toward your degree with transfer course work from other institutions. With two important exceptions (XB courses at the University Extension and courses taken at other UC campuses), transfer credit will not affect your Berkeley GPA.
Before you enroll at another school, you will need to verify that that you will get unit credit for the transfer work you are considering and that the courses you take will fulfill the requirements you wish to satisfy. When you are ready to return to Berkeley you will need to submit a petition for readmission (deadlines are strictly enforced: November 1 for spring and June 1 for fall).
CHECKING TRANSFER CREDIT
For Courses from California Community Colleges
- To check unit transferability and to determine whether the course you are considering will fulfill a specific University, College or major requirement, consult the statewide articulation website ASSIST (note that no more than 70 of these units may be applied toward the 120 units required to graduate).
For Courses from Other Institutions
- To check unit transferability, inquire at the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at (510) 642-3175.
- To check Letters and Science requirement credit (Reading and Composition, Quantitative Reasoning, Foreign Language, or the Seven Course Breadth Requirement), call the L&S Evaluation Unit at (510) 642-7391).
- To check for major requirement credit, contact your major department.
SUBMITTING TRANSFER TRANSCRIPTS
University Extension
- Extension transcripts with "XB" courses are sent electronically to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for students in good academic standing (there is no need to order a paper transcript). Students not in good academic standing upon enrolling in "XB" courses at the Extension must order a paper transcript and submit it with their readmission application to Letters and Science for readmission review.
- For all other Extension enrollments, a paper transcript should be submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, 110 Sproul Hall/ UC Campus/ Berkeley, CA 94720.
Degree Candidates
- If you are on the current degree list, order an official transcript from the school you attended (check with the school to make sure your grade has been posted before ordering!) and have it sent in a sealed official envelope to the Evaluation Unit, Office of Undergraduate Advising, 113 Campbell Hall/ UC Campus/ Berkeley, CA 94720.
All Other UC Berkeley Students
- If you are not on the current degree list, send an official transcript to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, 110 Sproul Hall/ UC Campus/ Berkeley, CA 94720.
