What are the deadlines for changing my class schedule in a fall or spring semester?

As of Fall 2005, the following deadlines are in effect:

Friday of week two of instruction:

Friday of week five of instruction:

Friday of week ten of instruction:

How do I make changes to my class schedule prior to each of the deadlines listed above?

Changes to your class schedule must be made via Tele-BEARS. Access is available until midnight of the relevant deadline. See the Office of the Registrar's website for detailed information on how to use Tele-BEARS.

Be sure to confirm all enrollment transactions and print a copy of the confirmation for your records.

What if I want to change my schedule during a UCB summer session?

To change your schedule during a summer session, follow the deadlines and instructions on the Summer Sessions website. Be sure to note that each summer session has a different deadline!

How do wait lists work?

Automatic wait lists are processed by the end of the third week of instruction; the department offering the course can add students into a class from a manual wait list through the end of the fifth week of instruction. For additional information, see the Tele-BEARS information on the Office of the Registrar's website.

Wait list status can be viewed on the Tele-BEARS screen through the end of week five of instruction. Be sure to review your wait list status to insure that it's correct. Students are responsible for confirming and adjusting their schedules, including wait lists, before the deadline.

My instructor says she will take care of adding me to her class. The 5th week deadline is almost here and I'm not even on the wait list yet. What should I do?

Even the most well-intentioned professors are sometimes unable to follow through on adding students into their classes. Since you will be held to the deadline, you must take care of adding yourself to the class through Tele-BEARS. If there are no seats available, contact the department to explore options. Do not rely on your instructor to take care of schedule changes for you, even if s/he offers to do so!

What if the instructor said he would drop me from the course?

Don't rely on instructors to drop you from courses - including waitlisted courses - you do not intend to keep! Even if an instructor says s/he will drop you from a class or from a wait list, you are still responsible for checking and finalizing your class schedule before the deadline.

But what if I didn't know I was enrolled from a waitlist until after the deadline?

All students are responsible for confirming and adjusting their class schedules - including wait lists - before the deadline. Be sure to double-check your schedule so you don't end up with an F in a class you didn't even know you were in!

What if I didn't know how I was doing in a course before the deadline?

Poor performance in a class or lack of knowledge about your performance before the drop deadline are not grounds for requesting an exception to the deadline. If you're not sure whether you should stay in a class, please discuss your situation with the instructor and/or a College adviser well before the drop deadline!

It is after the deadline and my situation has changed. Is it still possible to change my schedule?

Changes to students' schedules after the deadlines are extremely rare. However, if you find yourself in personal or academic difficulty during the term, please come see a College adviser as soon as possible and BEFORE THE LAST DAY OF INSTRUCTION. Do not let a little problem become a big one.

The adviser can help you understand your options. Should you decide to pursue a change to your class schedule after the deadline, you must submit your request in writing. The following items must be submitted as a single packet to the College of Letters and Science, Office of Undergraduate Advising, 113 Campbell Hall #2924, Berkeley, CA 94720-2924:

Detailed instructions are included on the petition checklist. Be sure to follow these instructions closely. Incomplete requests will be denied.

What is considered appropriate documentation?

Explanation of appropriate documentation follows on a separate page.

Will adding or dropping courses affect my financial aid package?

Pell or Cal Grants recipients must be enrolled in at least 13 units as of the end of week five of instruction or they may have to repay part or all of their Pell and/or Cal Grant.
