In certain situations, students are instructed by a dean or adviser to appeal in writing to the Deans' Conference.
- Before you may appeal in writing to Deans' Conference, you must meet with an assistant dean to review your request in person. Appointments are available up to one week in advance and can be scheduled by calling (510) 642-1483.
If you are appealing for readmission after dismissal: In order to meet the November 1 deadline (for readmission to a spring semester), it is recommended that you meet with a dean prior to October 1st. In order to meet the June 1 deadline (for readmission to a fall semester), it is recommended that you meet with a dean prior to May 1st.
During the readmission period, cases will be heard on a first come, first served basis, with an average of ten cases to be considered each week. It is in your best interest to submit your request well before the deadline.
- Appeals to Deans' Conference are made by writing a letter addressed to the Deans' Conference. The deadline for submitting your letter of appeal is the Friday prior to each Deans' Conference. All letters that arrive after the close of business on Friday will be held for the subsequent Deans' Conference. Please note that during non-readmission periods, Deans' Conference may not meet every week. You may submit your appeal at the reception desk in room 113 Campbell Hall or mail it to 113 Campbell, UC Berkeley, Berkeley, CA 94720-2924.
- Your letter of appeal should be no longer than one page typed and single-spaced and must include:
- Your signature;
- Your full registered name;
- Your student identification number (SID), address, email address, and telephone number;
- The exact nature of your request (e.g., retroactive withdrawal from spring 2003);
- A specific, yet brief and concise explanation of the circumstances or claims being made;
- All relevant dates;
- Your current study list and proposed future study list; and
- Your intended major (if undeclared).
- You must attach all supporting documentation (verification of employment, medical reports, etc.) to your letter of appeal. Incomplete appeals will not be considered by Deans' Conference. In addition, if you are requesting readmission after dismissal, please submit the following with your appeal:
Official transcripts of course work you did while away from Berkeley, documenting grades of B's or better (B- grades are not sufficient); Official letters from your current instructors (on college letterhead and sealed in an official college envelope), documenting your in-progress grades to this point; A program plan signed by your department or intended major; A signed declaration of major or Intend to Declare form; Other _____________________________.
- The decision made by Deans' Conference will be available to you after 1:00 p.m. on Friday following the conference by calling (510) 643-0727 or by coming to 113 Campbell Hall. College adviser Susan Cass will be able to explain the decision to you and assist you with any follow-up paperwork.
