American History and Institutions Requirements

FAQs for Undergraduate Academic Advisors

Q. What are the American History and Institutions (AH&I) requirements?

The AH&I requirements constitute two of the University of California's three system-wide requirements (the other being Entry Level Writing). They were established in accordance with Academic Senate Regulation 638, which reads as follows:

"A knowledge of American history and of the principles of American Institutions under the federal and state constitutions is required of all candidates for the degree of A.B., B.Arch., and B.S. This requirement may be met by passing an examination or examinations under the direction of the appropriate committee, or by passing any course or courses of instruction that may be accepted as satisfactory by that committee. The papers submitted in the examination shall be rated 'passed' or 'not passed'."

Q. As a college or major advisor, am I responsible for advising students about these university-wide requirements?

Yes. Academic advisors in the colleges and departments are responsible for advising students about all degree requirements.

Q. What UCB courses can be used to satisfy the AH&I requirements?

As of July 1, 2005 the list of UC Berkeley courses that can be taken to satisfy the American History requirement include History 7A, 7B, 130B, 131A, 131B, and 138. Courses that can be taken to satisfy the American Institutions requirement include Poli Sci 1 and 108A.

Q. My student is an international student. Does she need to satisfy the AH&I requirements?

If the student does not plan to change visa status before graduating, no. International students who have at least 90.5 semester units (senior status), hold a current, non-immigrant visa (F is the most common), and an I-94 departure record. may ask to have their AH&I requirements waived. To apply for a waiver, they should present their visa and I-94 departure record to the Office of the Registrar in 120 Sproul Hall before the semester in which they will graduate.

Q. My student believes she has already satisfied the AH&I requirements by passing an American History [or American Government] course at another college, but this does not appear on her student record. What should she do?

It usually takes up to the fourteenth week of the student's first semester at UC Berkeley for admissions to post requirements on the student record. If after the fourteenth week her records indicate that she has not satisfied the AH&I requirements the student should contact the AH&I Office to confirm that the course she took can be used to satisfy the AH&I requirements. If the course has been approved, the student should go to 110 Sproul Hall and ask an Admissions Evaluator to pull up her college transcripts and clear the requirement.

Q. My student believes she has already satisfied the AH&I requirements by passing an American History [or American Government] course at another college, but this does not appear on her student record. What should she do?

The Admissions Office is the office of record and point of contact for students/staff with student records questions concerning courses taken at other colleges. Send your student to 110 Sproul Hall to report the error.

Q. Do transfer students who satisfy the IGETC requirements automatically satisfy the AH&I requirements?

No. Unless the student passed one of the approved courses at other colleges, she has not satisfied the AH&I requirements.

Q. My student believes she has already satisfied one or both AH&I requirements by passing an American History [and/or American Government] course at UCB, but this does not appear on her student record. What should she do?

The Registrar's Office is the office of record and point of contact for students/staff with student records questions concerning campus AH&I courses. Send your student to 120 Sproul Hall, where she can fill out a correction form.

Q. My student still needs to satisfy her American History and American Institutions requirements. Can she take courses at a community college to satisfy these requirements?

Yes. Students may take a transferable and approved course or courses at other California colleges to satisfy their AH and/or AI requirements. The student may check with the AH&I Office to find out what courses are approved at the community college the student plans to attend.

Q. My student is returning to campus after an absence. Have the rules with regard to satisfying the AH&I requirements changed since she was first enrolled?

Yes. Depending on when she was admitted to UC Berkeley, there are different sets of rules for satisfying the AH&I requirements. Please refer to the AH&I web site for a description of how students may satisfy their AH&I requirements depending upon the year when they first entered UC Berkeley. If she is returning to UC Berkeley after an absence of ten years or more, she falls under the rules listed for students admitted between Fall 1981 and Spring 1983.

Q. My student wants to take the exams to satisfy her American Institutions and American History requirements. How do they work?

Information regarding the length, format and content of the American History and American Institutions exams is posted on the AH&I web site. PLEASE NOTE: The exam option for satisfying the AH&I requirements will be offered only through June 2005 -- after that it is eliminated. Students who wish to satisfy their AH&I requirements by taking an exam administered by the AH&I Office must do so before July 1, 2005. After that date, only course work can satisfy the requirements.

Q. My student wants to petition a course that she believes satisfies one of the AH&I requirements, even though it is not an approved course. What should she do?

To petition a community college course, the student should be directed to the Admissions Office. To petition a UC Berkeley course, the student should be directed to the Registrar's Office. Inquiries about petitions have been rare in the past, but because of the UC Berkeley course expansion effective July 1, 2005, there may be more inquiries about petitioning community college courses that are parallel to the new UC Berkeley courses that meet AH&I.

Q. Where do I find answers to other FAQs that students have about these requirements?

A list of FAQs for Students is available on the AH&I Web site. It's a good idea for you to familiarize yourself with these FAQs to ensure that you are giving students consistent advice.

Q. Whom should I ask if I have questions about how to advise students about the AH&I requirements?

Your supervisor is your primary source of information for questions concerning advising students about the AH&I requirements.
