Q. What is the American Cultures requirement?
The American Cultures (AC) Breadth Requirement is a Berkeley campus requirement, which was enacted in 1989 in accordance with Academic Senate Regulation 300, as follows:
Q. As a college or major advisor, am I responsible for advising students about campus and university requirements?
Yes. Academic advisors in the colleges and departments are responsible for advising students about all degree requirements.
Q. How do I find a list of current AC course offerings?
The On-line Schedule of Classes is the authoritative source of information on current AC course offerings. You can access a complete list of the current AC courses in the On-Line Schedule from the AC website. Or you can search the On-Line Schedule by typing "American Cultures" in the "additional information" box and by using any other parameters you choose to narrow your search further.
Q. I have been advising first-year students that satisfying the AC requirement is not a high priority, since they need to enroll in important major pre-requisites and college breadth requirements. Is this the best advice?
Probably not. Many AC courses have high demand and long waitlists. Also, some attractive courses may not be offered every semester. If you familiarize yourself with AC courses that also satisfy college and major requirements, you can help students plan their schedules to address all of these important priorities.
Q. My student believes she passed an AC course at Berkeley but it does not appear on her student record. What should she do?
The Registrar's Office is the office of record and point of contact for students/staff with student records questions concerning campus AC courses. Send your student to 120 Sproul Hall, where she can fill out a correction form.
Q. My student believes she passed an AC course at another college but it does not appear on her student record. What should she do?
The Admissions Office is the office of record and point of contact for students/staff with student records questions concerning courses taken at other colleges. Send your student to 110 Sproul Hall to report the error.
Q. My student wants to petition a course that she believes satisfies the AC requirement, even though it is not an approved AC course. What should she do?
The student should review the procedures for petitioning a course on the AC website. The process is the same for both campus and community college courses. If the student still has questions after reviewing the website, she should contact the AC Center at amercult@berkeley.edu.
Q. I thought that all questions about the AC requirement should be directed to the AC Center. Is that true?
No. The AC Center is a faculty development unit whose primary purpose is to assist faculty developing AC courses; currently, its only student advising role concerns specialized advising regarding the petition process. Academic advisors have the primary responsibility for advising students about AC.
Q. Where do I find answers to other FAQs that students have about the requirement?
A list of FAQs for Students is available on the AC Website. It's a good idea for you to familiarize yourself with these FAQs to ensure that you are giving students consistent advice.
Q. Whom should I ask if I have questions about how to advise students about the AC requirement?
Your supervisor is your primary source of information for questions concerning advising students about the AC requirement.
