Jane Paris

Name:

Jane Paris

Job Title:

College Adviser

Joined the L&S Office of Undergraduate Advising in:

July 2007

What is your approach to advising?

  1. Answer the questions the students bring, and challenge them to think about other things.
  2. Share my love for the liberal arts.
  3. I try to remember what it's like to be a new college student.

Education:

M.S., Higher Education & Student Affairs, Indiana University, 1994
B.A., Journalism & Political Science, Indiana University, 1989

How did you get here?

I've been advising since 1994 at various places, in this order: Semester at Sea, Miami of Ohio, the UC Berkeley Legal Studies major, Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, and Washington University in St. Louis.

What's your favorite part of your job?

As a college student, you are in a dynamic place in your life - socially, intellectually, and emotionally. As an adviser, I get to experience that with you.

Most unusual job you ever had:

Go-go dancer at Bardot A Go Go, or middle-school teacher in Sierra Leone

About me:

Class that changed my life: Political Science 305, Marxist Theory, at Indiana University

One of my many favorite things about Cal: the Hans Hoffman collection at the University Art Museum

My best Halloween costume: It's a tie a between Wonder Woman and the disco Statue of Liberty

Family: I live in San Francisco with my husband, son and daughter.

What advice do you have for L&S students in general?

Major does not equal career. You are on two distinct quests here: one is to figure out what you love to learn about in the classroom; the other is to figure out what you want to do when you graduate. In L&S, these two things are usually not related, so don't look to your major to define this for you. Embrace the freedom of a liberal arts education and the excellent career exploration resources here at Cal.
