Robert Holtermann

Name:

Robert Holtermann

Job Title:

College Adviser

Joined the L&S Office of Undergraduate Advising in:

July 1985

What is your approach to advising?

I want to help students explore options and take the best advantage they can of this academic wonderland. So I listen before I speak.

Education:

University of California at Berkeley, BA and MA

How did you get here?

I was born at Alta Bates hospital, crawled to Faculty Glade, and never left.

What's your favorite part of your job?

Helping students to think a bit bigger.

Most unusual job you ever had:

Cabinet maker (wood) in a machine shop (metal)

What's the best class you've ever taken?

There are too, too many wonderful courses in my past to single out any one.

About me:

I am thoroughly, indeed genetically, a Cal man. My grandfather was class of 1915. My parents met when they were students here and later conceived me in an apartment across the street from campus. I did my undergraduate and graduate work here in American intellectual and religious history. I fell in love and married a classmate, whose father is an alumn and an emeritus professor. I've been a College Adviser for 23 years. I have roots here and I know my way around.

What advice do you have for L&S students in general?

Cultivate the faculty. They are the best resource on Campus and you might even make a friend or two for life.
