Evelyn Y. Shaw
Job Title:
Peer Adviser
Joined the L&S Office of Undergraduate Advising in:
August 2009
What is your approach to advising?
Everyone deserves the best that I can give them.
Education:
Berkeley Class of 2012, Anthropology Major, intended graduation: Spring 2012
How did you get here?
I was a workstudy student for L&S Spring 2009 and got to know the office and some of the policies. Now, I'm a peer adviser.
What's your favorite part of your job?
Being able to help someone and make them feel better than they came in feeling. Or at the least, if I can't make things better, I try to make sure they know what they can be thinking about next.
Most unusual job you ever had?
Luckily, I've never had any awkward/demeaning jobs. The most I've had is the odd pet-sitting or acting crazy at summer camp.
Best class you ever took:
Religious Studies 90B: Introduction to Hinduism with Professor Little. Extremely engaging and funny professor, interesting cultural topics, and one of the GSIs brought his dog into lectures.
About me:
I am a sophomore and I remember the sense of awe, excitement, and yes, insecurity of coming to a completely new place. I am an anthropology major (emphasis undecided). My weeknights are mostly spent with the Ballroom Dance Team and I love to travel and hit the public library for comics and novels. There's so much more at Berkeley that I want to explore and I hope I'll have the pleasure of your company; feel free to drop by and chat - questions or just everyday things. I'm always here to listen.
What advice do you have for L&S students in general?
Sometimes you just don't get the chance to take classes for everything you're interested in. A great way to still be involved is to find a club about it! Berkeley has such a vast array of clubs that there's something that's bound to catch your eye. Try something you've wanted to know but never got the chance or something completely out of your comfort zone. You may be surprised with the results.
